Feature: Real estate maps
What we collect
The State Library of Queensland has an extensive, unique and valuable series of original maps and plans created by real estate firms. The collection, including more than a thousand maps ranging in date from the 1850s to the mid 1900s, covers areas throughout Queensland, but is predominantly from Brisbane.
The project
Estate maps from the John Oxley Library have been digitised and made accessible online. These digitised maps are useful to researchers investigating the history of urban land areas. It is possible to identify such things as how the land was subdivided, when the land was first auctioned, who the surveyors were, and who sold the land. Over one hundred of the maps chosen were published by the firms of John Cameron and John Harrop Henzell.
History of Cameron and Henzell
John Cameron was a leading Brisbane auctioneer and businessman whose famous mart was located in the old Town Hall building. John Harrop Henzell, who founded Henzell Real Estate, apparently worked as a clerk for Cameron Brothers prior to establishing his own business. Henzell Real Estate has traded continuously since 1875 and began as a land agency in Refuge Row.
