Feature: Reina Irmer
Reina Irmer was born in Bremen, Germany in 1946 and has worked as a photographer since 1964. Reina came to Australia with her family in 1983 and since 1986 has been employed as the Photographer in Charge at the State Library of Queensland. In this capacity, Reina has recorded major historical events in Queensland. These include the 100th anniversary of the Labor Party in Barcaldine, Gulf War demonstrations, the anniversary procession of Victory in the Pacific, the erection and demolition of the Expo site, as well as coverage of Expo 88 itself, the partial demolition and development of the Myer Centre, the redevelopment of Toombul Shoppingtown and the changing face of the CBD in Brisbane.
Reina has a particular love of photographing the performing arts in the medium of black and white. Some productions she has recorded are The Marriage of Figaro, The Wizard of Oz and La Traviata.
She processes and prints all this work herself and, while continuing to work full time for the State Library, she continues to build on an already impressive folio.
