The Ekka
The Ekka holds a special place in the hearts of Queenslanders. More correctly known as the Royal Queensland Show, these 10 days in August are a favourite event in Queensland’s social calendar.
The first exhibition on the site of the Brisbane Exhibition Grounds was the 1876 Queensland Intercolonial Exhibition. (See image 42351 at left)
In 1875 the National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland was formed for the purpose of organising this Exhibition, which was intended to showcase the best agricultural, pastoral and industrial resources in Queensland.
In 1920 the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) visited the Exhibition, and in 1921, the first ‘Royal’ Show was held when the Association was granted the prefix under warrant from His Majesty King George V.
From the Grand Parade to the Show Bag Pavilion, from the animal nursery to Side Show Alley, the Ekka continues to be a unique mix of tradition and innovation, of entertainment and education and the annual showcase of the State’s continuing agricultural and industrial development.
