Maryborough City Council lies approximately 260km north of Brisbane, inland from Fraser Island. Settled in 1847 and proclaimed a City in 1905, Maryborough was the port for wool, timber and sugar industries and the supply centre for the Gympie goldfields. Some 22,000 migrants entered Australia directly from Europe by sailing ship through the Port of Maryborough from 1859.
The Local History Collection forms a significant part of the Library’s collection. It contains a collection of copies of images that capture the history of Maryborough, a town renowned for its industry and historic Queensland style homes. To participate in this project, a partnership was formed with the Maryborough and Wide Bay Historical Society to enable digitisation of significant images.
The Local History collection of the Library also contains:
- Maryborough Chronicle newspaper on microfilm;
- published school and local histories;
- a large collection of Queensland Government Gazettes; and
- published works on the Indigenous history of the area.
