Tablelands Regional Library Service
Atherton is situated on the rich red volcanic soil of the Atherton Tablelands. It is located 90km south-west of Cairns and ranges from 500m to 1,280m above sea level, covering a total area of 620 square kilometres. The Atherton Tablelands' tropical climate is renowned and can be enjoyed year round. The Atherton town and catchment population of approximately 10,500 people is currently growing at a rate of about 1.9%.
The Atherton library been involved in the preservation of the region's local documentary heritage for a number of years. Our ‘Old Post Office Galley’ image collection was established in the 1980s. This collection contains over 1,000 historical photographs dating back to the late 1890s with 100 now available online via Picture Queensland. These images are representative of life on the Atherton Tablelands. One of the main focus areas was to involve the local community in assisting us to preserve and record our area's cultural past. Their ongoing support in donating many of the images and contributing to our local knowledge helps to promote and enhance our collections. The Atherton Library's Local History collection is the main Local History collection with satellite collections held at many of the other 10 library branches and is only one of the many services the Tablelands Regional Library Service provides for its clients.
